bensimon for men

Posted Nov 30, 2009 by gravitypope in men's shoes, bensimon

For Fall 09, gravitypope picked up some great men's styles from Bensimon. Traditionally this sneaker was constructed of canvas, but the suede tennis mids and tennis lacet are a great addition to the collection and any men's wardrobe. Fantastic in the Anthracite colour way, the maroon is equally interesting with the classic Bensimon toe cap in black, also seen on the new 2 eye lace up as well.

This long established French company started out just after WWII importing second hand clothes into France. Inspired by the surplus of army canvas sneakers, La Tennis Bensimon in suede, also available for women sizing, offers a simple luxury that is colourful and relaxed, perfect for a little bit of fun everyday.

quoddy - winter 2009

Posted Nov 20, 2009 by gravitypope

With a whole movement in fashion paying homage to humbler times, where craftmanship and quality were at the forefront of the industry, Quoddy shoes fits perfectly into this category of "heritage" branding. Started in 1909 and inspired by the Passamaquoddy tribe of eastern Maine's technique in moccassin construction, Quoddy has managed to redefine it's shoes to stay modern.sadf asd

Questions by Carrie Buchwalter.
Answers by gravitypope buyer Robert Kirkwood.

What is Gravity Pope's mission?
Our mission is to provide our markets with leading contemporary brands, in the most beautiful stores, with relaxed, conscientious service. We don’t put on any airs, and we like to take the pretentiousness out of the sales experience for our customers.

Who is the Gravity pope customer?
Our customer has great taste, and appreciates quality and design above audacious branding. They are trend-aware, but not trendy. They are men, women, young and old.

What inspires the store and products from season to season?
We’re always looking for better brands and products. We try to push our assortment to a new level every season, and bring our customers along with us. We always want to bring in something amazing, something not being offered in our markets.

What are your favorite labels?
Stephan Schneider, Robert Geller, Paul Smith, Jil Sander, Raf Simons, Acne, and Fiorentini & Baker.

Describe your personal style?
I’m really attracted to quality – great fabrics and beautiful construction. I love wool. I’m not loyal to one particular aesthetic, but I look for the best execution of whatever “look†I’m going for. I also have a bit of a practical streak, and end up buying things I know I’ll get a lot of use out of.

How has Gravity Pope and Louise inspired you?
Working for Gravitypope and for Louise has been a great experience. Louise has always been willing to take risks, and it’s very exciting for me to be able to find new brands and new products, and to be encouraged to do so. My own personal style has really evolved working for Gravitypope, and I’ve learned to appreciate great design and quality. The other great thing about Louise is that she has a great perspective on fashion – we buy and sell beautiful, exclusive, expensive product, but at the end of day, it’s just clothes. She keeps it real, and I’ve learned a lot from that.

What are 3 timeless pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe?
Cardigan, straight-leg raw indigo jeans, and a great leather jacket. This is true for men and women. And splurge on the leather jacket.

Whats can we expect from Gravity pope for SS10?
More great fashion of course! We’re extremely excited to introduce Hussein Chalayan to our stores – he’s a real visionary in the industry. Cacharel, the great French fashion house, has been reinvigorated by Cedric Charlier, former designer at Lanvin, and we’re excited to bring in his first collection with them.

What makes Gravity Pope such a haven for exclusive labels? How does it stand its own?
We have a reputation for being a leader in our markets. We bring in a lot of small, new or unknown collections that we really believe in and we stay true to them. We take the time to grow a loyal customer base, even if it takes several seasons, and I think this speaks to our integrity as a retailer.

Any parting words of wisdom?
Just remember, as Louise would say, in the end it’s just clothes.

converse - fall 2009

Posted Nov 4, 2009 by gravitypope in converse, sneakers

Converse is one of the classic American brands that for years have been offering great collaborations and amazing options to the classic Chuck Taylor hi top. Today's post features a few of the hi lights from Fall 2009 before the snow flies and we are forced to shelve the sneakers for winter boots.

Americas oldest woolen mill, Woolrich and Converse got together to produce a great collaboration of the classic Chuck Taylor using the mills heritage fabric in a perfect blue plaid. Woolrich wools have been made with pride since 1830 and as a result, the collaboration offers a modern take on the outdoor and urban lifestyle.

Another great spin on the classic Chuck Taylor hi top and one of the collaborations that inspired our new music inspired footwear section, is the ACDC Converse collection. More great ACDC styles to come online soon, check out more of the great music collections by Converse at

With autumn slowly but surely on the outs, Converse also offers a perfect style for the cold and wet streets of winter, the Chuck Taylor Outsider. With an excellent grip and a sleeker profile than other winter boot styles, this is a great option that is very much on trend with today's Heritage aesthetic with the comfort and versatility that Converse fans know and love.
