As lovers of not only fashion and footwear, we enjoy all aspects of design - with a particularly deep passion for furniture, interiors, and film. 'EAMES: The Architect and The Painter' a film narrated by James Franco depicts a delightfully candid view of the husband-and-wife-duo of Charles and Ray Eames that most certainly strikes a note of interest in us! Excited, we anxiously anticipate a viewing - releasing today at the IFC Center in New York City.
'The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America's most important designers. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life -- from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age -- has been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, Eames: The Architect and the Painter is the first film dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.'
Hypebeast recently caught up with twin brothers Messrs Dexter and Byron Peart of WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie for an interview discussing the brand, and the market. As we've known the brothers for quite some time now through WANT Agency (providing North American retailers with top brands Acne, Filippa K, and Nudie to name a few...), we're quite in love and have been excited about the WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie minimalist, yet luxe designs since day one in 2006.
A great little peak into the designs behind the brand we love, below is the interview courtesy of Hypebeast with Messrs and Byron from WANT Les Essential de la Vie:
WANT Les Essentials always in stock and on heavy rotation, available at gravitypope Tailored Goods locations & online at gravitypope.com
WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie is…inspired by timeless, functional design classics. The brand was conceived out of a “want” for premium quality leather goods to house the “essential” personal and professional products that we use in our everyday lives.
Balancing style and modern functionality…is our daily challenge. We aim to create a balance between a traditional style and a modern compatibility. The brand’s core value, identified on each of its products by its ubiquitous gold & silver zipper, is to achieve unity through contrast.
Accessories are the key to…defining your own personal style. While originally adorned for functional roles in protecting oneself from the elements – hats, eyewear, shoes or bags – accessories now play a significantly complementary role in completing one’s wardrobe. Unlike fashion, accessories don’t require periodic rotation, and are more often than not meant to be worn or used everyday. With this in mind, we are keen to deliver accessories that serve in terms of personal utility and style.
Material and color selection for WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie…is focused on building products that last – not only over time, but also trend. Since the inception of WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie, we have found our inspirations in architecture and furniture design. We are constantly sourcing leather, organic cotton, and other natural materials in terms of feel, quality, sustainability and durability. Accordingly, we continually develop colors and textures that are often consistent with seasonal directions, yet are still elegant and timeless. Ultimately, we are making products that we anticipate our users will pass on from generation to generation.
The most difficult part of developing products…is delivering to the market a finished product that not only meets our expectations, but more importantly those of our consumers. For us, designing really original new products comes quite naturally. However, we have consistently followed Dieter Ram’s guiding principles that “Less is More.” We have taken great pride in being disciplined enough to use significant restraint in keeping the product offering limited to what we believe to be only the essential items that our users require for his or her daily commute.
The current focus on craftsmanship…great news for our industry…and all areas of consumer consumption for that matter. There has been so much focus over the past decade to deliver faster, cheaper, disposable products to the market. We aim to be part of the counter culture which is rooted in delivering quality products which are high on design and produced in reputable environments, at a fair price, and ultimately are built to last. Traveling is… a great luxury – whether for work or pleasure. There is no question that getting on a plane weekly, as we do, is taxing on the mind and body, but it’s tough for us to complain – recognizing that we are so fortunate to have the opportunity to wander the world, share original experiences with diverse people, and be inspired by new and traditional customs and cultures. Marketing strategy… is pretty simple – “Stay true to who you are.” We have always envisaged WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie as a solutions company, with our sole intention to continually develop products (and in the future, potentially services) that meet, and adapt to, the ever changing needs of the modern commuter. We feel that as long as we deliver on this promise, we will continue to build a dedicated community that consists of a narrow selection of the worlds’ most influential retail stockists, and traditional and new media channels, that will help us to share our story.
The perfect accessory or piece of luggage should be…timeless, functional and easy. It is pretty obvious that we too have been greatly inspired by Steve Jobs. The Apple brand revolutionized the meaning of luxury. We are devoted in contributing to a “new luxury” movement, which steers clear of excess, and instead proposes original and uncompromising, premium products that are democratic in appeal and accessible to all. Our mission is to design and develop products that respect (not detract from) the beauty and simplicity of the cherished products that they house.
Life (La Vie) is…“what you make it” – Color of Spring by Talk Talk, 1986.

AnOther Magazine online with a few posted show highlights from backstage at Margaret Howell and Paul Smith at London Fashion Week for Spring/Summer 2012.
'Shirting and tailoring were the orders of the day at Margaret Howell and Paul Smith, giving way to a boy meets girl look. Whilst season on season Howell’s collections bring a classic simplicity with an androgynous edge, Paul Smith gives a women’s version of his menswear. There is a difference.
The crisp, white shirt and tailored trouser were key at both but if you think the Howell and Smith woman are the same think again. Just take their soundtracks as an indication of mood: Velvet Underground played out at Smith and Joni Mitchell at Howell.
Whilst Howell was a continuation on previous seasons, there was a definite boating feel with the Breton stripe featuring heavily, a yellow mac, neckerchiefs and even sailor hats. The colour palette came in variations on white, shades of blue with a pop of bright yellow and tomato red. One of the main highlights was a belted, long, white shirt that featured a tiny embroidered polka dot in red.
At Paul Smith his inspiration for last season – Patti Smith – still had resonance in the styling of the models dressed in trouser suits, shirts and flats (brogues and loafers), with slightly dishevelled hair. More feminine and softer looks came in the form of sheen striped skirts and floaty shirt dresses which were interdispersed between the variety of trousers: cigarette, wide-legged, low-slung pyjama and high-waisted.' -AnOther Magazine
For the upcoming Spring/Summer 2012 season we're pleased to announce that we'll be carrying our first season with British fashion designer Margaret Howell MHL.
Starting her career in accessories, Margaret Howell launched her (self named) clothing label in 1972. Recognized for the simple, classic, quality designs - the Margaret Howell collections have proved successful with decades of steady growth within their menswear and womenswear lines - found in fine boutiques across the world.
Always mesmerized by the photography and garments displayed within Margaret Howell's seasonal black & white campaigns, we're both excited & anxious for the arrival of MHL womens and mens for Spring/Summer 2012.
'The Fishtail Parka, followed a new design, and took inspiration from vintage military influence as well as some elements from our Bomber. The Fishtail Parka is made out of British Millerain waxed cotton - a 6th generation mill in England that specializes in producing fabrics for the British military. Fully lined in a tightly woven natural cambric cotton. The lining gives off a dry-hand, resembling the lightweight feel of paper, but the close weaves allow for extreme durability and warmth. Added details to the jacket includes Storm collars with a zip-out hood, hidden snap pockets, and Swiss Riri zippers throughout.' - Wings + Horns
Wings + Horns x Heritage Research Fishtail Parka for Fall/Winter 2011 now available at gravitypope Tailored goods while limited quantities last.

Nudie Jeans presenting another great online feature titled 'Organic Cotton'. More photos and words from the Sweedish denim & fashion label below!
'The mainstream method of cultivating cotton has a major impact on the environment. However, there is huge potential for improving the situation, and choosing organically grown cotton is one way of making a difference. In order for cotton to be organically certified, the fields where it is farmed must be totally free from pesticides for a period of three years. At the denim producer, the spinning, dyeing and finishing of the yarn for our organic jeans is carried out in accordance with organic procedures. When it comes to Nudie Jeans, organic cotton is not just a seasonal fashion trend. We have higher aims than that – our long-term goal is to use exclusively organic cotton.
GOTS The majority of the organic denim used by Nudie Jeans is certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). The aim of the GOTS standards is to define requirements that are world-wide recognised. This is to certify the authenticity of organic textiles and to give a credible assurance to the end consumer. Our dry organic jeans are GOTS certified through our supplers. This means that the whole production chain, from cotton to a pair of jeans, is certified.
THE TEXTILE EXCHANGE Nudie Jeans is a member of the Textile Exchange (formerly The Organic Exchange), which is a non-profit organisation that supports the farming and trading of organically grown cotton.' -Nudie Jeans
Nudie Jeans with their online feature 'Slow Denim'. With styles for the season stocked up and currently available in shop, take a read over & enjoy a few fine snaps provided by our fine friends over at Nudie Jeans for their online feature.
'SELVAGE DENIM IS MADE on old-style shuttle looms. The fabric is woven using one continuous cross thread; the weft. As the weft loops back into the edge of the weave the selvage edge is created. This edge is usually stitched with a coloured thread. On vintage jeans, some selvage denim has green, brown or yellow thread running down the edge. These stitches were intended as distinctions used by the mills to differentiate between fabrics. Best known is the red selvage.
Selvage production is much slower than conventionally produced denim, and only the best raw materials are used. It can be compared to the "slow food" movement; this is slow denim.
THE OLD SHUTTLE LOOMS produce three metres of 75 centimetre-wide selvage denim per hour, and a modern loom is more than ten times faster. And, as the shuttle looms date back to the 1950s, they require a lot of tender loving care in order to work.
Modern denim production is a high-tech industry in which computers control much of the process. In the slow denim factory, the looms are under constant supervision from a couple of denim craftsmen, who oil the machinery and inspect the weaves . The rhythmic sound of the shuttles going back and forth creates a loud and hypnotic soundtrack. Naturally, the slow production process makes the denim more expensive, but there are also many advantages. The low speed produces far less stress on the yarn, which makes the hand of the denim softer and the fabric more durable.' - Nudie Jeans

Definitely a good watch, so treat yourself to a mellow 20 and check it out.
Check out Part 2 for an in depth look at the interview 'A Morning With Paul Smith' on The Goddess Guide.
A little while back (OK a long while back, sorry!) Hypebeast TV posted up a video of Band Of Outsiders' Scott Sternberg inside his/their Los Angeles office. The video gives us a 2 minute 30 something brain pick into the playful BOO mentality (including a little hooky) and all the while providing a nice look at their beautifully cluttered California office space.
'For the past seven years, Scott Sternberg's Band of Outsiders has come to represent one of America's best contemporary men's labels. The brand has effectively maintained preppy cues to the past all while continuing on a considered modern aesthetic. In this episode of Hypebeast TV, we meet candidly in Sternberg's office to gain an insight into his personality and brand.' - Hypebeast.

More than a bit late on this one, but here's a little interview MR. PORTER posted a while back with Acne Founder Johnny Johnasson in his Stockholm office!
________________________________________
Tell us about the location of your office. It's in an old bank. We've been here for quite a while although we nearly didn't get the lease because we were competing with the Swedish priest organisation here in Stockholm. Luckily they gave it to us as somebody on our board knew the person that owned the building. Tell us why you have your office this way. My office is particularly crowded at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I like a white space with clean lines and a clean table to start working but some of these things I just need to have around me. I don't even know why.
What takes up the most room in your office? I keep lots of photos from the shoots we do here at Acne and I keep a lot of books for references. When you have really good things around you, sometimes it makes you shape up. It makes me see what good people do. I surround myself with good people, people who are much better than me, for the same reason. It's one of my tricks.
You don't have a computer? No I don't. I love not having a big computer on my desk. It makes the space much more personal. I used to draw on a computer but I don't anymore. It's just easier to do it by hand or in the fitting room. I have an iPad instead. I love it. It's almost like a magazine - clean and simple. The format is a bit more fashionable.
Why did you get into designing clothes? It never bores me. I'm always really excited about what I do. It feels like when you start a new collection you think you want to change the world, but then in the end there's just the product, so it's kind of a disappointment in some ways. But fashion, like music, has to have a feeling to it. If it doesn't then why bother? I look for those things that make me feel something. Why did you start Acne? Some friends of mine, creative people I respect, were starting something and basically I just wanted to be a part of it. I was just happy to have something new to do. It's been quite a journey. My schedule is pretty crazy these days.
You have been based in Stockholm for some time. Can you tell us some good places to visit? I'm very local, so I tend to go to the same places. I'm a bit of an idiot like that. One coffee shop I go to is owned by a friend of mine - it's called Il Caffé. There are a lot of really interesting, friendly people there so it's a good place to start the morning. For a night out I'd go to the south part of Stockholm (Södermalm), it's the most cultural, experimental area. My favourite place there is Kvarnen - it's a restaurant and bar full of interesting fashion people and students. If you want to go more fancy head downtown to Teatergrillen.
What five items of clothing do you think every man should own? A white T-shirt, a pair of worn black jeans, a white shirt and a pair of expensive black leather shoes (preferably English ones). I also think you should own something very feminine, like a piece of jewellery or something from your mother's wardrobe. That's how I dress.

Short interview with A.P.C. Founder Jean Touitou by i-D Magazine online:
Where was the first A.P.C. store and what was it like? It was Rue Princesse in Paris, across the street from the ‘Village Voice’ bookshop space, in a courtyard, and was a mix of show-room/store/office/fabric storage.
How do you choose where to open your stores, is it market led or just personal preference? The market never leads my choice. It will have to do more with the street proportions, the street name, the space’s vibes. Of course that “method” could also make wrong moves happen, like in All Saints Road in London a few years ago.
You started A.P.C. in 1987, how was it received in the context of the 80s fashion scene? The 80s were ugly to me. Now that ugliness has become a visual reference to do nice things, how funny and ironic.
How did people react to understated, minimalist clothing? Well some (the Italians mostly) thought it was just a trend that would last 6 months. Some hate it. Clearly. I still love minimalism. I even love doing frigid clothes, for very un-frigid people that is.
How do you balance fashion with politics? Does it make life harder? I don’t balance this and that. There are no politics in fashion and what is fashion anyways. It just doesn’t exist. Fashion is a thing without culture, politics or morals, it’s just a corpus of signs and codes to make idiots look sort of cool. Well if a cool person dresses well too, that doesn’t hurt of course. The good news is that it’s possible to exist as a human without feeding the fashion beast. Parisians are well known for their simple, chic dress sense.
In your opinion, why do they dress so well? Probably they have a tendency of not “over killing” an idea and also, I must say there is so much Celine knock-off these days, that’s why you feel Parisians look good!

After carrying Engineered Garments for a few seasons from out of our Edmonton location, we're ecstatic to announce that we will be welcoming Engineered Garments to our Tailored Goods Vancouver location for the upcoming Fall/Winter 2011 season. A great addition to our menswear collections, be sure to keep an eye out for our first deliveries...we expect sizes to not stick around for very long!
Engineered Garments took its brand name from a pattern maker hired to draft the first round of patterns. She claimed that the clothes were not designed but engineered due to the vast amount of detailing involved in each garment. The designer of the collection, Daiki Suzuki, agreed. Details from American sportswear, outdoor clothing, and military uniforms are all included in the collection and give Engineered Garments unique and practical detailing missing in much of American sportswear today. Daiki coveted American sportswear when growing up in Japan. To him, clothing which came out of the US was an interesting blend of design innovation and the latest in industrial manufacturing. He was mesmerized by the details and saw that American sportswear was affected in many ways throughout the decades from the immigrants who sewed the clothes to the industry specialists who designed and manufactured them. He came to appreciate the flaws and weaknesses in some of the manufacturing processes and thought they defined many of the American made clothes in a special way. "Those clothes have a natural, post modernist & deconstructive quality about them. If a button falls off you sew another one on but it probably won't match and this makes it uniquely yours. When you find a garment that you love to wear it survives with you in its own way and becomes a second skin. It is these clothes which I want to make, clothes that you love wearing and become yours through the experience you have with them." - E.G.
Presentations for seasons to come from our friends over at Acne. Autumn/Winter 2011-12 and Spring/Summer 2011 Resort! Always a good video, and little something to look forward to...

'This is a small capsule collection influenced by the titillating ostentatious tenacity and affluent lifestyle associated with the largest small craft harbor in the world: Marina Del Rey, located in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles, California.
For the premiere of this collection Jack Coleman’s put together a little 8mm film with our main man and undercover gigolo Kyle Robbins aka “Cairo”. After a hyper adrenaline morning of whipping and whapping lefts and rights (mostly rights) on a 5’10” INT soft top fish, Cairo breezes over to the Marina for late breakfast Mimosas and soft boiled eggs at Jer-ne in the Ritz Carlton. You see the Jer-ne is like his office. The afternoon is spent making business calls, nurturing connections, and planning his schedule for a frolic fun evening with the clientele, all expenses paid. Perhaps a Rolex thrown in for a job well done? Touché Cairo, Touché!
Cairo can be seen wearing the latest from the Marina Del Rey collection. Cuffed shorts and cargo muscle pants in cotton linens, breezy fine weight cotton t shirts and tank tops, linen pullovers for when the wind turns onshore, striped cotton shorts, and nylon easy to wear trunks.' - W.O.R.
SAFE IN CAMP A new series of paintings inspired by the community of Refuge Cove.
'They say the best things come out of the blue. Last summer I found myself in a place called Refuge Cove, in Desolation Sound on the BC coast. Boat and floatplane access only, sleeping above the water in a stilted house, relearning the simplicity and beauty of coastal life after living in the city for 15 years. This was a return to my roots, having grown up the child of caretaker parents on a tiny island called Gooch in the Gulf Islands. In the early 1970's a group of educated 'back to the land' 30-somethings, purchased this parcel on West Redonda Island from Norman and Doris Hope. Therein was founded the Refuge Cove Land and Housing Co-op project of 18 member shares. Uncle Norman passed on, and Auntie Doris continued to live in their old cabin in the cove until the mid 1980's as an active member of the co-op. This became a vibrant community consisting of a gas dock, general store/postoffice (both predating the co-op), laundry and showers, a cafe bakery, and a burger stand famous for miles around. Refuge Cove was the hub of Desolation Sound. I was immersed in the culture of this tiny coastal village and the daily life of it's residents and transients, along the boardwalks and around the cove. This community is in decline, it's buildings in a state of beautiful decay. There's a colourful cast of characters that live there and the way they live their lives is almost as apparent in their faces as their eccentricities. When these people, now in their 60's, move on from here, Refuge Cove as it has existed for the last 35+ years will change drastically. In this series of paintings I wanted to document this moment in time, while Refuge Cove is still under the watchful eye of it's co-op keepers. Staying on into October, tourist traffic had all but ceased and the generator had been turned off, the General Store closed. After endless days of sun and bleached wood, the greens and grays started to creep in with the damp. The remaining residents helped each other saw up escaped mill logs, salvaged from the sea. Preparing for the cold months as fresh cedar and woodsmoke mingling on the crisp air. It takes a certain kind of person to exist there year round and few actually do. From what I gather it's pretty bleak in the winters, pretty dark. To survive up there they have to help each other. And in that community lies the basic humanness that rarely exists in the city. Safe in Camp is a saying often used by Don Wicks, a longtime, year round resident. One version is that it comes from hunting trips, when everyone's accounted for, all machines are in working order, and food is being made, everyone has a bunk. Don says it's about memory and it's about friendship.' - Artist Meghan Paterson.
'The past decade has seen A.P.C. grow from a cult French label to a brand recognized the world over for clothes that deftly mix contemporary style with classic looks—all the while helmed by founder Jean Touitou since 1988. Curious about what has kept the line going strong throughout its gradual expansion, for this video we sat down with Touitou to find out.' - Cool Hunting.
