Paul Van Doren decided to move west to Southern California along with his partners, Jim Van Doren, Gordy Lee and Serge D'Elia (all of whom had experience in the shoe manufacturing business), and open the first Vans shoe store in Anaheim, California on March 15, 1966. They filled the first store with empty boxes and actually made the shoes in the factory for their first 12 customers in the morning to be picked up in the afternoon. They hadn't thought of having change on hand so they instructed their customers to come back and pay for their shoes the next day. All 12 came back to pay. In 1976, skateboarders began wearing Vans shoes and asked to have different colors combined on them. Professional skateboarders started designing shoes and the shoes quickly became the craze of Southern California. Today Vans continues producing it's line of classics in new colours and patterns and collaborates with designers to create limited edition sneakers for streetwear and the collector alike.

Vans Vault designs are timeless and inspired by art, music, street fashion and the world of boardsports.

Despite the unfortunate flooding in Calgary, our event with House Of Vans at Commonwealth for Sled Island was a go - one of the very few shows amongst a festival of many. Check out the video recap, and thanks to everyone who came out for what ended up being quite the memorable event for all.

'A natural disaster, a legendary hardcore band and a slew of positive minded Canadians summed up what may go down as one of our most wild events. We’re happy to share with you guys a recap of the first Canadian edition of House Of Vans that took place at Commonwealth in Calgary in conjunction with Sled Island music festival.

The event featured a Vans “Gift Shop”, where exclusive T-shirts (packaged as vinyl records) designed by Calgary artist Josh Ruck were handed to everyone. Our friends from Tubby Dog supplied tacos for the hungry crowd while 45's master, DJ Vinyl Ritchie set the tone prior to OFF! taking the stage and setting it off in pure Vans fashion!

As the video featured on Offthewall.tv depicts pretty vividly, Calgary was hit the day of the event with some of the most serious floods Canada has ever seen and inherently left thousands of Alberta residents without homes including some of the folks who were in attendance that evening. Miraculously House Of Vans at Commonwealth was one of the only shows as part of the Sled Island Festival that did not get shut down and was left untouched. The crew along with OFF! and the staff at Commonwealth pulled off what for many reasons is a memorable event.
