In 1918, Timberland founder Nathan Swartz began his shoe-making career in Boston, Massachusetts, as an apprentice stitcher. Swartz bought half an interest in The Abington Shoe Company in Boston in 1952 mainly doing contract work for other manufacturers, then bought the remaining interest and brought his sons into the company in 1955.

The company changed its name to 'Timberland' in 1973 as a result of the very popular timberland boot that used injection-molding technology. This enabled the production of virtually waterproof boots by connecting the soles to the leather uppers without stitching.

Today, Timberland is known for making great boots designed for hiking and mountaineering, and are popular as a primary element of fashion.
