Starting in 1901, Dr. Martens began as a modest work-wear boot, created by the Griggs family in the small town of Wollaston, Northamptonshire, England. Over the course of six decades, the Griggs family earned a solid reputation in the footwear industry for their sturdy, durable work boots.
In 1945, while healing from a broken foot, Dr. Klaus Maertens created a unique air-cushioned sole to aid with his recovery. Maertens designed a proto-type and along with engineer & friend Dr. Herbert Funk, the two partnered to create unique air-cushioned shoes using excess military supplies.
After seeing an advert for the innovative air-cushioned soles, Bill Griggs acquired an exclusive license to manufacture the air-cushioned sole. With a few key changes to the original Dr. Martens work boot, including an altered heel, the distinctive yellow welt stitch, a two-toned grooved sole edge & unique sole pattern, on April 1, 1960 the iconic eight-eyed 1460 Dr. Martens boot was born.
