Gravitypope has moved and set-up shop in a previously derelict building originally constructed by Calgary architect Harold Hanen — the creative mind behind the development of Calgary’s Plus15 walkway system. The new shop eventually share the space with popular Edmonton record store Blackbyrd Myoozik as well as chocolatier Sweet Lollapalooza Confections.
In its bigger space, you'll find what gravitypope is known for, plus a little extra with men’s and women's shoes and apparel, accessories and an apothecary section. The 1973 building originally housed jewellery store Marcel de Paris and gravitypope is keeping that tradition, selling jewellery from lines including Pearls Before Swine, Jill Platner and Arielle de Pinto.
“I’m thrilled to finally expand our offering in the Calgary marketplace,” says Louise Dirks, gravitypope founder. “I launched my business with the belief that creativity enlightens life and I can’t wait to share this spirit with the city.”
Indeed, the new gravitypope space is an impressive expansion. The interior was designed and built by Peter and Wendy Turner from The Artworks in Edmonton. The couple combined 1970s furniture, contemporary fixtures and furnishings and whimsical pops of colour to create a space that is a visual treat.
While you peruse the new gravitypope for the latest designs by John Fluevog, Marni or Michael Kors, also keep a lookout for a 1970 brass-and-green-glass mirror from Southern France, recycled stained glass from the Trippen headquarters (previously the Bulgarian Embassy) in Berlin and a custom art installation by Russian-Canadian visual artist, Kristi Malakoff.

Brass accents, mirrors and pops of whimsical colour create a contemporary, open shopping environment at the new gravitypope location.

The renovated store has two shoe galleries — one for men's footwear and one for women's. Lines carried include Converse, See by Chloe and Dr. Martens.
The massive Jason Miller Modo chandeliers in the footwear galleries are worth looking up to see.
Gravitypope also has men's and women's apparel galleries, including brands such as Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone.
The many mirrors scattered throughout the space add the illusion of depth to the already expansive shop.
A beautiful display of Bocci blue glass bubble lights trickles down from the main gallery's ceiling.
The new store offers one-stop shopping — build a complete outfit from top to bottom while enjoying a treat from nearby Sweet Lollapalooza Confections.
The split-level shop offers potential hours of meandering for shopping enthusiasts.
