GLERUPS AT HOME WITH
Aaron Wynia

Aaron Wynia is a Toronto-based photographer whose work is rooted in the people and places that define the city. Moving between portraiture, documentary, and the occasional still life, his images carry a straightforward sense of familiarity. Often shooting within his own community, his work reflects the rhythm of Toronto life, unpolished, immediate, and grounded in connection. This approach has led to features with publications such as VICE, Dazed & Confused, Stussy, and The Fader, along with earlier collage projects that explored the subtle aesthetic conversation between images.

His portfolio spans editorial and commercial work, including projects with artists like Drake, Matty Matheson, and Nazem Kadri, as well as an ongoing archive of personal photographs. Outside of commissioned shoots, Aaron collects art, spends time with his wife Piper and their new baby, and continues to document the quiet, shifting moments. Whether candid portraits, found objects, or simple still lifes that shape his surroundings.

How long have you been based in Toronto, and what continues to draw you to the city?

I've been based in Toronto for about 15 years. What draws me to the city has changed over time. I'm from a small town about an hour away, and when I first started coming to the city, it was to skate with my friends. I ended up moving here for post-secondary school and photography work.

Now, what keeps me here are mainly my friends and the food. I do find myself getting burnt out on the city more these days. My wife and I bought some property up north a couple of years ago, and the balance between nature and the city has been amazing. Now that I’m older, I sometimes miss small-town life, so having that balance feels great.

Who are some local artists or friends you think deserve more attention?

What does an ideal day in Toronto look like for you?

Wake up (extra early these days since having a baby), then go on a walk with Oskar and my wife down to Sam James on Brock. Maybe shoot a gig from 12–3. In the afternoon, I’ll take Osky to the park, then end the day with an early dinner at home or at our current favourite spot, Dotty’s.After Oskar goes to bed, I like to wind down with a Leafs game, either at home, Danny’s Pizza Tavern, or Ladybug.

What’s something your child has taught you recently?

Oskar has taught my wife and me to be more present and enjoy the small moments. The days can be long with a baby, but they grow and change so quickly that you really have to soak it all in.

How did photography first enter your life?

When I was a kid, my grandpa gave me a big box of Polaroid film and told me to have fun with it. Shortly after, I bought a Polaroid camera and started shooting my friends, skateboarding, nature, whatever was going on around me, and just came to love it.

What kinds of projects or moments behind the camera feel the most meaningful to you?

I love shooting studio visits with artists. It’s fascinating to see each person’s studio space and creative process. A favourite artist of mine that I’ve photographed a few times is Kent Monkman—his studio feels like walking through a piece of history. I’m always grateful to get the call from him to come by.

What’s your favourite piece of art you own, and why does it resonate with you?

Probably my Kent Monkman painting. It’s small, maybe 5x7. It’s of Kent’s alter ego, Miss Chief, in a thong, heels, and headdress, with his arm raised. It’s become like his signature image. Anytime I work with Kent, I ask to trade instead of taking cash, and he’s always happy to do it. This one was especially generous, and I’m really grateful to own it.

Are there any artists or photographers who are inspiring you right now?

Painters off the top of my head: Devon Pryce, Darby Milbrath, Nick Bierk, Tom Van Ryzwyk, Chad Murray, and Niall McClelland.

Where do you tend to find inspiration outside of photography?

Paintings, old movies, music, and my friends.

What are some of your favourite restaurants, coffee shops, or stores in Toronto?

Restaurants: Dotty’s, Barberian’s, Dreyfus, Pho Linh, Loga’s Corner, Prime Seafood Palace, Oroshi

Coffee shop: Sam James

When you’re not shooting or editing, how do you like to spend your time?

Golfing, spending time at our property up north in Parry Sound, having dinner with friends, or doing anything outdoors.

What pair of Glerups are you wearing, and what do you like about them?

I’m wearing the Glerups shoes in charcoal. They’re warm and cozy without being bulky and really form to your foot. Perfect for around the house in fall and winter—I’ve been wearing them every day since getting them.

Any shoutouts?
